Join the Lab
Thank you for your interest in the Climate Analytics Lab. I receive far more enquiries than I can answer individually, so I am unable to reply to unsolicited emails about positions in the lab, and I don’t meet with prospective applicants outside the routes below. This isn’t a reflection on you or your background; it keeps the process fair for everyone. Please follow the route for your stage below, which I keep up to date.
Postdoctoral researchers
We are recruiting postdoctoral researchers to work on MOSAIC, which combines observations, symbolic equation discovery and differentiable simulation to discover new climate parameterizations. Applications are open: see the position details and how to apply. Please apply as described there rather than emailing separately.
PhD students
I expect to take new PhD students for Fall 2027 entry. I advise students through two UC San Diego programs:
- Climate, Atmospheric Science, and Physical Oceanography (CASPO) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography
- Data Science at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute
To be considered, apply directly to the program and name me as a potential advisor in your application (and say why in your statement of purpose). I don’t hold meetings with prospective students before applications are reviewed; shortlisted applicants are contacted as part of the admissions process.
Current UC San Diego students
Undergraduate, master’s and PhD students at UC San Diego who are interested in a research project should fill out the lab interest form. The strongest submissions have a concrete idea of what you’d like to work on and how it connects to our projects or publications. Forms are reviewed on a rolling basis as projects and capacity become available. I’ll be in touch if there’s a good fit, but please don’t expect an individual reply.
Before applying, it helps to:
- Have a solid grounding in Python and machine learning, through courses such as SIO(c) 209 (see Teaching) or equivalent experience.
- Read some of our recent publications and the background reading list we use for new students.
Data science undergraduates can also work with the lab through the DSC 180 capstone.
Unfortunately, we are not able to host students from outside UC San Diego other than through the postdoc and PhD routes above.
Finding out more
The best way to understand what we work on is through our projects, publications and lab philosophy. If you join, the philosophy page describes what you can expect from me and from each other.
